The VCU Electric Power and Energy System (EPES) Lab has become a part of the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering since Dr. Zhifang Wang joined VCU in August 2012. The lab is dedicated to the studies to realize a stronger, smarter and greener power grid. Research conducted here focuses on Power System Modeling and Optimization, Renewable Integration, Grid Vulnerability Analysis, and Intelligent Demand Side Management.
The EPES lab has received research funding from the Department of Energy through the ARPA-E and CERTS programs and developed close collaborations with national labs and other universities.
  • Hadi Athari received the 2017 ECE Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant award, Aug. 2017!
  • The paper titled "Interdependence of Transmission Branch Parameters on the Voltage Levels" authored by M. H. Athari and Z. Wang has been accepted to appear in the 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), Big Island, HI , Jan. 3-6, 2018!
  • The paper titled "Impacts of Wind Power Uncertainty on Grid Vulnerability to Cascading Overload Failures" authored by M. H. Athari and Z. Wang has been accepted to appear in the future issue of the IEEE Transaction on Sustainable Energy, 2017!
  • The paper titled "Sequential Optimal Placement of Distributed Photovoltaics using Downstream Power Index" authored by M. H. Athari, C. Yang, and Z. Wang has been accepted to appear in the 49th North American Power Symposium (NAPS 2017), Morgantown, WV, Sep. 17-19, 2017!
  • The paper titled "Optimized Household Demand Management with Local Solar PV Generation" authored by S. H. Elyas, H. Sadeghian, H. O. Alwan and Z. Wang has been accepted to appear in the 49th North American Power Symposium (NAPS 2017), Morgantown, WV, Sep. 17-19, 2017!
  • The paper titled "Combined Heat and Power Unit Commitment with Smart Parking Lots of Plug-in Electric Vehicles" authored by H. Sadeghian and Z. Wang has been accepted to appear in the 49th North American Power Symposium (NAPS 2017), Morgantown, WV, Sep. 17-19, 2017!
  • Seyyed Hamid Elyas defended his PhD dissertation titled "Synthetic Modeling of Power Grids Based on Statistical Analysis" in May 2017!
